S.U.R.F.
is a concept that represents
our core philosophy here at the UCen.
SERVICE
This was the easy one. Everyone knows
that the UCen has a culture of being very
service oriented. It drives our organization
in everything we do. If we take customers
for granted and provide mediocre or poor service, then
we have clearly failed in one
of our core principles. The development of
this culture starts with each individual
employee. If we don’t bring a positive
attitude to work, then that attitude will
clearly be evident in how we deal with
customers and co-workers.
UNITY
This concept primarily grew out
of the realization that we can do a better
job of working together to make the UCen
a stronger organization. Specifically, our
committee felt that the various departments within the
UCen (Bookstore, Dining, Administration) could do a
better job of collaborating and assisting each other
to
become even more productive and
responsive to customers. Our goal is to
reinforce the concept that all employees
are a part of the University Center
organization and that they have
responsibilities that reach beyond
their individual units.
RESPONSIBILITY
We recognize that student employees, in particular,
are juggling many tasks each
day as they move between class, work,
and study. However, when they show up
for work, we have certain basic expectations
of them:
1) Show up on time and know your job
2) Do
what you say you’ll do
3) Take responsibility for your actions
In addition, this concept also encompasses
the idea that we all (students and career
staff) have responsibility for the financial success
of the UCen. It is the belief of our S.U.R.F. committee
that if we truly follow
the principles defined by Service, Unity, Responsibility,
and Fun, then we will
ultimately contribute to the financial
success of the building.
FUN
We decided that it was important to state
right up front that having fun at work is
also part of our expectations. It’s not only
okay to have fun, but we expect people to
find ways to enjoy their time at work. Our
goal is to create a positive atmosphere in
the UCen that welcomes customers, fellow employees,
and prospective employees
who can readily see that this is a unique
place to work.
