Two students
write to tell us how our program has helped them succeed after
college.
The four
years I worked in UCen Administration taught me that communication
is an integral part of any job. One of my duties as a Service
Manager was to convey daily to my bosses the normal, and occasionally
not so normal, happenings in the UCen. It was also pertinent
to communicate with my coworkers so that everyone’s
shift ran smoothly and the work was completed efficiently.
Furthermore, it was necessary to communicate not only with
employees in other departments in the UCen, but also with
clients renting conference rooms, Associated Students officers
and volunteers, Community Service Officers, campus police
and any others involved with the UCen.
It has been over a year since
I entered the “career world.” Upon looking for
and subsequently securing a job, I realized that I had become
skilled in the art of communication as a result of my time
at the UCen. I have used the knowledge that most obstacles
can be overcome by simply communicating effectively to help
me transition into a career in wildlife biology.

My name is Marcus Mathis and I am currently
a counselor here at UC Santa Barbara in the office of Admissions.
In this position I conduct presentations and workshops, evaluate
applications, and perform many other functions within the
office. I’m also a UC Santa Barbara Alum, and while
a student here I was an employee at the University Center
for 4 years. The Bookstore is an ideal place for students
to work while at UCSB. When I was there, I gained valuable
work experience while enjoying a great atmosphere that was
within walking distance of my classes. While working in the
customer service department, I learned the importance of time
management, how to communicate effectively with staff, students,
and faculty, and the importance of paying attention to details.
I also made many life long friends that I still keep in touch
with. Most importantly, the bookstore management understood
that I was a student first; my work schedule was created around
my class schedule, and during finals week my work hours were
decreased so I could study. What a great place to work!
